A wonderful gift to our pantry effort
In our attempts to be as Christ to our neighbors, we’ve been on a journey to see how we can help our neighbors when they are hungry, when they are cold, when their lives change in an instant and they don’t know where to turn.
We’re not alone in this effort, of course. One of the people who is also leaning into the effort is also a former member of the congregation. Bill Wavrin and his family have been making moves to help those in our community who struggle to put nutritious food on their tables each day. A year ago, in a church newsletter, he saw that we were giving away Thanksgiving Turkey dinner kits, (all the ingredients, just add cooking!) He got in touch and asked how he could help.
As we began to expand from holiday meals to pantry box, to twice-monthly food pantry days, to breakfasts for our homeless neighbors, our capacity expanded and we started to dream of bigger things.
Bill offered us a commercial freezer and a commercial refrigerator to help us in our efforts and today, the fridge was delivered!

This was all after we learned the painful lesson that colder days mean folks sleeping rough don’t get up early and we had fewer people come down for breakfast. Pastor Tim delivered what was left to several places a little later, when people started to rouse themselves from whatever warmth they could get. It worked out, and we are learning every time we do this.
Thanks to Bill Wavrin and his crew, his family and the good folks of Sunnyside for their support. We would also like to again, thank our partners over at Grocery Outlet, who have been so generous.
Just another Friday at Our Saviour’s
We had this remnant from a different time standing in the yard just behind the church. It was a standing water pipe that was never really used. There it is, just there between Bob and John.

We started to get a slow rise in the water bill and this was the suspect. The church gentlemen, plus some very helpful young men from Grandview High, set about digging it up to see what they could see.

About three feet down, the leak was found. Michael on the right spent entirely too much time lying on the ground, fishing the last few buckets full out of the hole. The problem was discovered, the pipe was eliminated, and we hope this will mark a reduction in our unfortunate water bill increase.

The culprit was found, the leak is closed!

Thanks to Michael Bennett and John Deleon for helping us out! Our crew was Del Carr, Bob Johnson, Paul Brooks, and Pastor Tim.
On the same day, we had our pantry day and we tried to help feed some of our neighbors. Debbie Mendoza, Dawn Martin and Pastor are the regular crew.

Thanks to all who donate their time and their labor to making the church and our neighborhood a better place!
Yet another Successful Garage Sale!
Once again, after a LOT of donations . . .

. . . we gathered out in the parking lot for our annual exercise in cleaning out other people’s garages!

People came out at a steady pace and at the end, not much was left, and that was donated.
Many thanks to Tammie, Terri, Paul, Raul, Wendy, Dawn, Debbie, Florance, Bob and Deb. We’ll see you again next year (after you’ve forgotten how much work this is)!
Our Local Theater Troupe
Each fall, the Over The Hill Theatricals rehearse a new production. Our Saviour’s provides the initial space as the actors learn their lines, the sets are designed and built, and the costumes are assembled. This year, they will be performing “45 Minutes from Broadway,” an adaptation of George M Cohan’s “Give my Regards to Broadway.”
They’ve been diligently at work since July, and the performances this year will be at Sunnyside High School in the auditorium September 5th at 7 and the 6th at 4, and the 20th and 21st at 2 in the afternoon.
OSELC members Performing/Directing this year are Debbie Mendoza, Marlaine Mars, and Pastor Tim.

Christmas Time at Our Saviour’s
We will be gathering on Christmas Eve for a candlelight service to celebrate the birth of Christ into our hearts once again. Friends and family will gather together, sing Christmas Carols together, and in the glow of our candles, recapture the spirit of the season – Family – Faith – Fellowship – Hope (yeah, I know, a failure of alliteration, but what can you do?).
All are welcome so join us as we welcome the savior!
“God’s work. Our hands.”
During the month of September, OSELC and Faith Lutheran of Toppenish are collecting new and gently used blankets for the homeless. The goal is to provide 80 blankets to the homeless who gather for a meal weekly in Toppenish. The blankets will be distributed the first Wednesday in October during the meal.

OSELC has plenty planned for Summer 2018, starting with a full slate of activities during the month of June.

We’ll wrap up the month of June with Vacation Bible School at United Methodist Church, located at 9th Street and Edison Avenue in Sunnyside. VBS is 9 am to noon on June 25, 26, and 27.
